Any member of the Millburn community will tell you that the Millburn Deli is the heart of our community. For years, it has been the go-to spot for the best food in town. This month, we decided to poll the ultimate school-day experts: our teachers. We asked Millburn’s educators to share their absolute favorite sandwiches on the menu.
- The Turkey Sloppy Joe
Triple- decker rye, turkey, Swiss, coleslaw, and Russian dressing.
- Chosen by: Mr. Ruddy
- Verdict: “This is a classic that I’ve been eating since I was three years old—long before the deli had most of the items on the menu today! Back then, there were even different owners. The rye, turkey, Swiss, coleslaw, and Russian dressing are a perfect mix of flavors. If you need a backup, The Perfect Roast Beef (#10) is an excellent second choice.”
- The Jay Ray
Chicken cutlet, smoked bacon, cheddar, BBQ sauce, and chipotle ranch.
- Chosen by: Ms. Hummer
- The Verdict: “I love a warm, savory sandwich with all the best sauces and fixings! My obsession actually started when the PTO treated the staff to Millburn Deli at the beginning of the school year to kick things off. Since then, I crave a Jay Ray every single year just to keep that back-to-school excitement going!”
- The Godfadda
Chicken cutlet, smoked bacon, mozzarella, and Russian dressing on a pressed sub roll.
- Chosen by: Mr. Nixon
- The Verdict: “I haven’t had the chance to try too many items on the menu just yet, but so far, The Godfadda is easily my absolute favorite.”
- The DIY Vegetarian (Pesto & Peppers)
Whole grain bread, homemade pesto, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers.
- Chosen by: Mr. Silver
- The Verdict: “Being a vegetarian is admittedly tough at a deli! I might be the most boring person to ask since I don’t eat meat or chicken, but my absolute favorite sandwich growing up was whole grain bread with their delicious homemade pesto, mozzarella, and roasted red peppers. It might look simple on paper, but I love it.”
The Deli Weighs In:
After reviewing our roster, the staff over at the Millburn Deli, reached out with one major note: the list is incomplete without a Griller #8. Featuring grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, and their famous house pesto aioli pressed on rosemary focaccia, the deli insists this is the missing link to our faculty food guide.
Whether you choose a classic Turkey Sloppy Joe like Mr. Ruddy, a savory Jay Ray like Ms. Hummer, or a custom vegetarian order like Mr. Silver, it is clear that our faculty takes their deli choices just as seriously as their lesson plans. The next time you find yourself in their midday rush at the deli, consider taking a recommendation from the staff and trying something new. Ultimately, enjoying the town’s best food is a staple of the Millburn experience, and as any student or teacher will tell you, the only thing better than a Millburn Deli sandwich is beating Livingston.
